There's certain jargon that you pick up within a department. And I'm not talking about 10/11/12 codes or phonetics - I'm talking phrasing and what everything is called informally.

One of my officers who is not from the area still has moments where he has some trouble with his words over the air.

Like, for instance, when there was a vehicle versus power pole. He was trying to convey this to me, but it came out a little something like this:

Unit: "Dispatch, the pole is sheared, blocking the, uh... center... lane, er... median, lane. Center area lane next to the, uh divider. Divider. Yeah."

So, I keyed up, waited a couple seconds and came back with ".... 10-4?"

He took a picture with his cell phone and texted it to me. Added to the log "Center divide blocked by downed power pole #123456 // Negative lanes blocked"

A twenty-something dispatcher taking 911 calls, yapping on the radio, and dealing with the general public - with a mad case of headset hair. Not quite so jaded yet, but not naive as I once was. Losing my soul one call at a time.

This reflects my views and not the view of my employer, etc.  If you have a problem with this, I suggest using the back button.
